Austin's 1823 settlement of the area. The Karankawa Indians survived here as primitive hunter-gatherers, but the tribe was driven out by industrious settlers, who established Garden Town, later called Websterville. By the 1890s, Webster was officially the name of the town. Japanese farmer Kiyoaki Saibara helped area residents learn to grow rice, starting in the early 1900s.
